Commonly asked questions

Quick answers to the situations we hear every day. Need help right now? Call 0161 527 7531, we can often pause visits while we review your options. Or request bailiff help online.

What does StopBailiff actually do?

We provide fast, confidential help when bailiffs contact you. We explain your rights and talk to enforcement on your behalf. We look to get you immediate Breathing Space from the bailiff and perform an initial fact find to see how best to help you. If you meet the criteria for an IVA you will be referred to our associate company Arkle Insolvency Limited for advice and information on the debt solutions available to you. IVAs are subject to eligibility and acceptance. Fees apply.

I have a bailiff at my door, what should I do right now?

Do not let them in. Keep your doors locked, speak through the door, ask for identification and the reason for the visit, and call 0161 527 7531 for immediate advice.

Can bailiffs force entry into my home?

For most debts, no. Bailiffs must make peaceful entry through an unlocked door. Only in rare cases — such as certain criminal fines or HMRC debts, can they get court permission to force entry.

What items can bailiffs take, or not take?

They can take non-essential, high-value items you own, like electronics or vehicles. They cannot take essentials such as beds, cookers, clothing, or children’s belongings.

I’ve received a bailiff letter, what happens next?

Contact us straight away. We’ll check the details, deadlines, and available options to stop visits or further enforcement before it escalates.

Will you speak to the bailiff for me?

Yes. With your consent, we’ll contact the bailiff or enforcement company directly to verify details and request breathing space while we work on your case.

Is StopBailiff advice free and confidential?

Yes. Our initial help is free and completely confidential. If you meet the criteria for an IVA you will be referred to our associate company Arkle Insolvency Limited for advice and information on the debt solutions available to you. Any costs for solutions will be explained before you proceed.

What solutions can stop bailiff action?

Once Breathing Space (where eligible) has ended, only a formal insolvency solution can stop further bailiff action. These include IVA, Bankruptcy and Debt Relief Order. If you meet the criteria for an IVA you will be referred to our associate company Arkle Insolvency Limited for advice and information on the debt solutions available to you to allow you to make an informed choice. IVAs are subject to eligibility and acceptance. Fees apply.

My debt has been passed to a bailiff, what do I do?

You still have rights. We can often pause visits while we review your situation and deal with the enforcement agent on your behalf.

Will this affect my credit file?

Speaking to us won’t affect your credit file. However, defaulting on payments to your creditors along with court action and enforcement can affect your credit rating. Formal debt solutions like an IVA, Bankruptcy and DRO will all appear on your credit file for a period of 6 years.

How fast can you help?

We usually provide same-day support. Call 0161 527 7531 or message us on WhatsApp, acting quickly can often stop bailiff visits entirely.
